Nebraska Medicine is offering a first-of-its-kind clinical trial for a new multiple sclerosis (MS) treatment. MS affects a person’s central nervous system.

The new treatment, which has been used for blood cancers, would genetically modify healthy T-cells to attack the cells believed to cause the autoimmune attacks of MS.

“What's exciting about this treatment is that potentially, CAR T therapy might turn [out] to be the treatment that can address an important treatment gap in multiple sclerosis, which is progressive MS,” said Dr. Rana Zabad, who runs the Nebraska Medicine multiple sclerosis program.

Jan Janisch-Hanzlik is the first person in the world to receive this new treatment called allogeneic CAR T-Cell therapy. The treatment utilizes a healthy person’s donated T-cells, which are then genetically modified to take out the cells believed to cause the autoimmune attacks associated with MS. It’s been used before to treat blood cancers, but this is a first-of-its-kind trial for MS treatment.

Janisch-Hanzlik said she is feeling great after the therapy, which followed a round of chemotherapy.

“I can run faster and jump higher, but I couldn't run before, and probably still can't run now, but I definitely can jump,” she said with a laugh. “I never ever thought that my journey with MS would embark on something so groundbreaking.”

According to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, MS affects almost three million people worldwide.

“I wanted to do it, not just for me, but really, for the whole MS population,” Janisch-Hanzlik added.

Nebraska Medicine doctors said they are cautiously optimistic this new treatment could potentially bring down that number, but they are only in phase one of the treatment.

Dr. Matthew Lunning, the medical director of gene and cellular therapy, said the technology used in this therapy isn’t new, but the application of it for MS treatment is. The allogeneic, meaning donated, CAR T-cells are genetically enhanced and manipulated to go after a B cell called CD 19.

“The hope is that, over time, those B cells will reset,” he said. “Kind of like restarting a computer: control, alt, delete, that allows those B cells to come back, but come back as better B cells, and not the B cells that were doing the harm.”

Zabad clarified this is not a cure, because there are several more stages of the treatment in order to medically determine efficacy.

Nebraska Medicine does have a line of patients waiting to receive this treatment, but there are a number of FDA safeguards to work through first.

As of now, Janisch-Hanzlik said she is feeling so much better that she was able to do a little gardening on her own, much to the chagrin of Zabad, who would have preferred she stay away from Nebraska’s intense summer heat.

The grand opening of the Catalyst building marked a major milestone in the launch of UNMC’s EDGE District, ushering in what leaders called a new era of innovation, collaboration, and economic transformation. Housed in the renovated 1906 Omaha Steel Castings plant, the 170,000-square-foot Catalyst now serves as a hub for researchers, entrepreneurs, and health care innovators to converge and bring discoveries to life. At the ribbon-cutting event, UNMC Interim Chancellor Dr. H. Dele Davies likened the district’s emergence to a modern Renaissance — one that keeps Nebraska-born innovations in-state and fuels long-term growth. Joined by Nebraska Governor Jim Pillen, NU President Dr. Jeffrey Gold, and development partners Koelbel & Co. and GreenSlate Development, the celebration highlighted Catalyst’s role as a regional beacon for health science innovation and a launching pad for the next generation of breakthroughs.

has been reborn as a 170,000-square-foot medical innovation hub at the heart of UNMC’s EDGE District. This $97 million public-private redevelopment—led by UNMC, GreenSlate Development, and Koelbel and Co.—preserves historic elements like exposed brick and a gantry crane while transforming the space into a vibrant coworking environment designed to spark “serendipitous collisions” among startups, researchers, and entrepreneurs. Now home to anchor tenants like UNeMed and UNeTech, the Catalyst aims to accelerate healthcare inventions and attract global talent. Featuring flexible workspaces, amenities, and a public-facing brewery and event venue, Catalyst sets the tone for the broader EDGE District vision, which includes the under-construction CORE Building, a city-funded parking garage, and future development all linked by skywalks and the upcoming streetcar line. The project signals a new era of collaboration and innovation for Omaha and the state.

Catalyst Opens as the First Building in UNMC’s EDGE District

UNMC has officially unveiled Catalyst, a 170,000-square-foot innovation hub that marks the first major opening in the new EDGE District west of its main Omaha campus. Housed in a beautifully transformed former steel plant, Catalyst brings together healthcare researchers, entrepreneurs, investors, and startups—including UNMC’s own UNeMed and UNeTech—to spark collaboration and commercialization of medical innovations. With approximately 20% occupancy and 18 initial tenants, the public-private venture represents about $97 million in investment, including university and city funding. Featuring coworking space, shared amenities, a coffee shop, and an in-building brewery, Catalyst is designed to fuel “serendipitous collisions” of ideas and usher in economic growth for Omaha and Nebraska. This groundbreaking project sets the stage for further development in the 30-acre EDGE District—planned to include lab facilities, the CORE Building, a parking garage, retail, and more—all interconnected via skywalks and future streetcar access.

Big Grove Brewery has officially opened its first Nebraska location in the EDGE District, bringing a vibrant new coffee shop and soon-to-open taproom to the north side of the Catalyst building. Located just across Saddle Creek Road from UNMC, Big Grove is now serving coffee, pastries, and light fare on weekdays from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m., offering a welcoming meet-up and remote-work spot for med center employees—who can enjoy 50% off a 16-ounce beverage through May by showing their ID. Full service, including award-winning craft brews, locally sourced menu items, and one of Omaha’s largest outdoor patios, will launch in June. With a strong focus on community engagement and partnerships, Big Grove is set to become a lively cornerstone of the EDGE District and a favorite gathering place for healthcare workers, innovators, and neighbors alike.

On February 7, the final beam was placed on UNMC’s CORE (Center of Research Excellence) building, a 180,000-square-foot, $105 million facility located in the EDGE District and slated to open in mid-2026. Designed to support both wet lab and computer-based research, the CORE building will serve UNMC faculty and external partners, offering state-of-the-art incubator space for bioscience startups. UNMC leaders see the facility as a catalyst for reversing brain drain, enhancing Nebraska’s biotech industry, and fostering collaboration among researchers, students, and industry innovators.

UNMC’s CORE (Center of Research Excellence) building marked a major milestone in February 2025 with the placement of its final steel beam — a key step toward its 2026 opening. As a future anchor of the EDGE District, CORE will provide vital infrastructure for wet lab and computer-based research in areas like oncology, drug discovery, and digital health. Together with the Catalyst innovation hub, the EDGE District is rapidly evolving into a 30-acre epicenter of biomedical research, entrepreneurship, and commercialization. Designed to reverse brain drain and position Omaha as a national biotech hub, the district will bring together startups, researchers, and industry partners to fuel innovation and economic vitality in Nebraska. UNMC leaders say the EDGE District is more than a physical space — it’s a bold vision to Explore, Develop, Grow, and Engage across sectors and borders.

Construction is ramping up in the EDGE District with The Opus Group set to begin post-tension concrete work on a new seven-story parking garage at 4605 Farnam Street. Developed by Koelbel & Company and GreenSlate Development, and owned by the City of Omaha, the garage will add 753 much-needed parking stalls—including four EV charging stations—to support the growing activity around UNMC’s Catalyst Building and future CORE facility. The structure’s stairwells and elevator cores are already complete, with full project completion expected by October 2025. Opus, serving as the design-builder, architect, and structural engineer of record, was selected for the project based on their successful collaboration with GreenSlate on the nearby Storz Warehouse. As the EDGE District continues to grow, the garage will provide essential infrastructure to accommodate employees, visitors, and future development along Saddle Creek Road.

UNMC has officially named its 30-acre innovation district west of Saddle Creek Road the “EDGE District,” symbolizing its mission to Explore, Develop, Grow, and Engage. Announced during an October 2024 press event, the EDGE District will serve as a transformative extension of UNMC’s campus — blending cutting-edge research, startup incubation, and community-focused amenities. Anchored by the Catalyst building and the under-construction CORE facility, the district will feature biotech spaces, food and beverage options, and Nebraska’s first Bio Nebraska office. With strong public-private partnerships and support from leaders like U.S. Rep. Don Bacon, who helped secure funding for a pedestrian bridge connecting the district to the main campus, EDGE is poised to drive economic growth, retain local talent, and elevate Nebraska’s bioscience footprint on a national scale.

Nebraska Medicine recently offered a first look at its Innovation Design Unit (IDU), currently under construction on level six of University Tower at Nebraska Medical Center. Highlighted during the latest colleague forum, the IDU represents the future of inpatient care, featuring thoughtfully planned spaces designed to enhance both patient and provider experience. A fly-through video rendering showcases the unit’s modern layout and forward-thinking design. The IDU is scheduled to open on January 7, 2025.

Construction is accelerating on UNMC’s six-story CORE (Campus Operations and Research Excellence) Building at Saddle Creek Road and Farnam Street, with structural steel now going up and completion expected in late summer 2026. The facility will house both wet and dry labs supporting research in microbiology, physiology, genetics, and more, while also emphasizing sustainability and future flexibility in its design. As the anchor of the emerging Saddle Creek Campus and located near the soon-to-open Catalyst building, the CORE Building will play a vital role in advancing translational research and biotech innovation. Plans also include a future pedestrian bridge to UNMC’s main campus and a new adjacent parking garage funded by the City of Omaha.

UNMC Chancellor Jeffrey P. Gold, MD, was joined by U.S. Rep. Don Bacon and Omaha Mayor Jean Stothert to announce exciting progress on two pedestrian and bike walkways that will enhance safety and connectivity around UNMC’s Omaha campus. With an additional $2 million in federal funding secured through Rep. Bacon’s support, the project will now advance construction of walkways over both Saddle Creek Road and Leavenworth Street—connecting the Field Club Trail to the campus near the Lauritzen Outpatient Center. Backed by UNMC, the City of Omaha, and previous federal grants, these walkways are part of a larger vision to create a safer, more accessible, and bike-friendly environment for the campus and surrounding neighborhoods. City and campus leaders highlighted the project’s role in improving traffic flow, supporting Vision Zero goals, and strengthening ties between the medical center and the community it serves.

, outlining a strategic framework for responsibly embracing artificial intelligence across education, research, clinical care, business operations, and combating disinformation. Led by Emily Glenn and Rachel Lookadoo, the 65-member task force emphasizes both the transformative potential and the inherent risks of generative AI. The report recommends clear policies, sustained funding, cross-campus coordination, and a continued community of practice to guide AI integration at UNMC. Early priorities include preparing students and employees for AI-enhanced learning, developing a shared institutional philosophy, and mapping AI-related research. Adopted into UNMC’s strategic planning, the report positions the university as a national leader in health-focused AI innovation. Leadership work groups are now developing tactics to bring these goals to life — ensuring that as AI accelerates, UNMC remains ahead of the curve and grounded in its mission to improve lives through education, research, and care.

UNMC recently broke ground on the CORE (Campus Operations and Research Excellence) Building, a transformative new facility that will provide the wet and dry lab space critical for turning life-saving biomedical research into real-world products. Unlike startups in other industries, biotech ventures require highly specialized infrastructure, which the CORE Building will deliver—supporting areas like microbiology, genetics, and pathology. UNMC leaders, including Chancellor Jeffrey P. Gold, MD, and UNeMed President Michael Dixon, PhD, highlighted the building’s role in fueling innovation, growing startups, and driving economic impact for the city and state. As the anchor of UNMC’s Saddle Creek Campus and neighbor to the soon-to-open Catalyst building, the CORE Building will foster collaboration between researchers, clinicians, and entrepreneurs—creating ideal conditions for breakthroughs in precision medicine, drug development, and targeted therapies. Completion is expected in early 2026.

The University of Nebraska Board of Regents has unanimously approved the program statement for UNMC’s new CORE Building (Campus Operations and Research Excellence), marking a major milestone for the emerging Saddle Creek Campus in Omaha. Designed to support UNMC’s growing research enterprise, the CORE Building will house wet lab and computer-based research focused on drug discovery, oncology, and other strategic areas, while also offering leasable lab space and ground-floor retail. Strategically located next to the Catalyst building—home to UNeMed, UNeTech, and biotech startups—the CORE Building is poised to become a hub for research, innovation, and commercialization. The facility will also include administrative offices and shared amenities, and connect to a new city-funded parking garage, with future plans for a pedestrian bridge linking it to the main academic campus. Construction begins this fall, with completion expected in early 2026.

UNMC is taking proactive steps to harness the power of artificial intelligence with the formation of a comprehensive, 64-member campus-wide task force focused on AI’s impact across education, research, clinical care, business operations, and misinformation. Led by Chancellor Jeffrey P. Gold, MD, and Library Dean Emily Glenn, the task force will deliver its first recommendations this fall and help shape UNMC’s 2024 strategic planning. Emphasizing both opportunity and responsibility, leaders say the initiative aims to position UNMC at the forefront of health-focused AI innovation. During the same all-campus forum, Dr. Gold shared key campus updates, including record-breaking enrollment, the appointment of new leadership, progress on Saddle Creek developments like the CORE building, and upcoming milestones such as the Board of Regents visit and the opening of a new Starbucks.

A transformative $13.5 million federal grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation will help fund a new pedestrian and bike trail spanning the length of the UNMC Omaha campus. The Midtown Medical Center Bikeway Connection project will enhance campus connectivity, improve safety, and link UNMC to the broader regional trail system via the Field Club, Keystone, and Papio trails. The project includes two pedestrian bridges—over Saddle Creek Road and Leavenworth Street—creating safer, more accessible routes for cyclists and pedestrians. With sustainability and commuter access in mind, the initiative supports UNMC’s growing commitment to alternative transportation, building on its already successful goal of reducing single-occupancy vehicle trips. Construction is expected to be completed by 2026.

UNMC celebrated the groundbreaking of the Innovation Hub at Catalyst, a major redevelopment project located at 48th and Saddle Creek Road that will serve as a dynamic hub for entrepreneurship, biomedical innovation, and economic growth. The event brought together key leaders, including Gov. Jim Pillen, Sen. Pete Ricketts, Mayor Jean Stothert, and University of Nebraska President Ted Carter, who praised the project as a symbol of Nebraska’s collaborative spirit and forward-thinking investment. Set to open in late 2024, Catalyst will unite UNMC’s UNeMed and UNeTech branches under one roof, while also offering leasable space to biotech and technology startups in a revitalized 1906 industrial building. Chancellor Jeffrey P. Gold, MD, emphasized that the facility will accelerate lab-to-market innovation, support job creation, and reinforce UNMC’s commitment to improving lives through research, discovery, and public-private partnership.

UNMC’s Saddle Creek Development is set to accelerate this summer with several key projects breaking ground. Major activity includes construction on public infrastructure improvements—new roads, sidewalks, lighting, and traffic signals—through a joint effort with the City of Omaha. A centrally located parking garage will also begin construction, timed to open alongside the district’s first buildings. The Catalyst project, which will house UNMC’s Innovation Hub and provide space for biotech and tech startups, is moving into its construction phase with completion expected by December 2024. Simultaneously, work will begin on the CORE building, a new administrative and research facility designed to replace an outdated structure and accommodate UNMC’s growing research enterprise, with completion targeted for early 2026. The site, formerly Omaha Steel Castings, will also see improved traffic flow and safety through a new intersection at Saddle Creek and Leavenworth in 2024. A formal name and brand for the district is expected to be announced later this year.

The University of Nebraska Board of Regents has approved the development of UNMC’s Innovation Hub at Catalyst, a key anchor project within the university’s new Saddle Creek campus. Set within a renovated 1906 industrial building, the Innovation Hub will unite UNeMed and UNeTech to foster collaboration among researchers, entrepreneurs, and investors. As a UNMC-owned facility, it will include over 40,000 square feet of space for innovation activities, with additional leasable areas available for biotech and tech startups. The hub is designed to accelerate the commercialization of university-driven technologies, support new venture creation, and catalyze economic growth across the region. Construction began in fall 2022, with completion expected in spring 2024, marking a major step in UNMC’s transformation of the Saddle Creek corridor from an industrial site into a thriving innovation ecosystem.

The University of Nebraska Board of Regents has approved a new seven-story administrative facility for UNMC, to be built at the corner of Saddle Creek Road and Farnam Street. This $21 million project will replace the outdated administrative building on 40th and Dewey and is designed to support modern hybrid and in-office work models. UNMC will occupy one full floor plus shared conference, wellness, and support space, while the remainder of the building will include Nebraska Medicine offices, retail space, and future office buildouts. A planned pedestrian and bike bridge will connect the new facility to the main campus. Construction begins summer 2022 with completion expected by December 2025.

The Omaha City Council has unanimously approved an interlocal agreement committing $93 million in city funding to support the UNMC campus expansion and Project NExT — a multibillion-dollar, state-of-the-art disaster response and medical research facility. This decade-long investment includes $45 million for Project NExT and $48 million for public infrastructure such as streets and a new parking garage on the Saddle Creek campus, which will also feature mixed-use development. Project NExT, backed by local, state, federal, and philanthropic partners, positions Omaha as a national leader in health security and biomedical innovation. With $300 million already committed by the State of Nebraska and UNMC’s designation as a key federal pilot site for disaster response training, the project is expected to drive economic growth while strengthening national readiness for future public health emergencies. Importantly, the city’s financing plan leverages tobacco and vaping occupation taxes, with no new tax increases required.

UNMC has selected T&G Investments to lead the design and construction of a new 350,000-square-foot administrative building at the southwest corner of Saddle Creek Road and Farnam Street — a cornerstone project within the university’s expanding Saddle Creek Development. The new facility will serve as the administrative headquarters for UNMC and Nebraska Medicine, while also supporting clinical faculty and enabling greater flexibility across the campus by relieving pressure on core clinical and teaching spaces. Designed with mixed-use features and multi-modal connectivity, the building will contribute to both institutional growth and neighborhood revitalization. With Leo A Daly as design lead, McCarthy Building Companies as general contractor, and BranchPattern advancing sustainability, the project team brings a strong local track record. This keystone development will bridge the existing campus with the new innovation corridor, further advancing UNMC’s mission as a global healthcare leader.

UNMC has selected Koelbel and Company, GreenSlate Development, and The Lund Company to lead the $45 million redevelopment of the historic Omaha Steel Works site into a dynamic mixed-use innovation campus on the west side of Saddle Creek Road. The project — the first phase of UNMC’s broader Innovation Hub vision — will include collaborative office space, a food hall and market, and an event center designed to foster health-focused entrepreneurship and community engagement. With support from the City of Omaha for infrastructure and a planned pedestrian connection to campus, the development honors the site’s WWII-era industrial legacy while advancing UNMC’s mission and midtown revitalization. Anchored by partners like UNeMed, UNeTech, UNeHealth, and the Nebraska Business Development Center, the Innovation Hub aims to catalyze commercialization, support startups, and drive inclusive economic growth in the region. Construction was targeted to begin by the end of 2021.

UNMC is leading a major transformation of Omaha’s Saddle Creek corridor, turning a historically significant industrial site into a dynamic innovation and administrative hub. The 30-acre redevelopment will feature the Innovation Hub—anchored by UNeMed, UNeTech, UNeHealth, and the Nebraska Business Development Center—to support research commercialization and startup growth, modeled after St. Louis’ successful Cortex Innovation Community. Alongside this, a new 350,000-square-foot administrative building will consolidate office space, add retail and community amenities, and connect to the main campus via a planned pedestrian bridge. The project emphasizes historic preservation, green space, flood mitigation, and long-term sustainability goals, all while maintaining neighborhood character and existing tenants like Don & Millie’s and Rathskeller Bier Haus. Supported by City infrastructure investments, the development is set to revitalize midtown Omaha and position UNMC for continued growth.

UNMC is transforming a historic steel mill near Saddle Creek and Leavenworth into a new innovation hub designed to accelerate research commercialization and startup growth. The revitalized facility will house UNeMed and UNeTech, bringing together entrepreneurs, investors, and researchers in a collaborative, medically focused ecosystem. Inspired by successful models like St. Louis’ Cortex district, the project aims to spark a wave of biotech innovation in Omaha. Located in a federal Opportunity Zone, the site offers tax advantages for developers and emphasizes historic preservation, honoring its WWII-era industrial roots. This initiative is part of a broader vision for the Saddle Creek corridor, which also includes a planned administrative tower and enhanced pedestrian green space at Farnam and Saddle Creek.

At a 2007 public forum, nearly 200 Omahans got a first look at transformative proposals for the potential realignment of Saddle Creek Road—an initiative aimed at improving flood control, traffic flow, and connectivity near UNMC’s campus. Presented by HDR Engineering, the feasibility study outlined three options, including two dramatic redesigns featuring a new drainage swale and relocated roadway that would open space for future UNMC expansion and create green space for recreational trails. The proposed improvements could reduce flooding, improve pedestrian and bike access, and serve as a catalyst for $250–$350 million in midtown redevelopment. While the visionary project could take decades to realize, leaders from UNMC and Destination Midtown emphasized its long-term impact on the campus and surrounding community. An environmental study and public input phase were planned as next steps.
